Source-removal duct cleaning for South Brisbane homes

Each branch is isolated and cleaned with rotary brushes or compressed-air whips while a HEPA-filtered negative-air unit holds the system under suction. Debris moves toward the collection point rather than into occupied rooms. Branches are cleaned in sequence, working toward the extraction point.

Dust inside a duct does not leave on its own. It clings to the walls, packs into joins and settles wherever the airflow slows, such as bends, take-offs and the far end of long runs. Source removal tackles that build-up directly. A brush or air whip loosens the material from the duct surface, and a negative-air machine fitted with a HEPA filter pulls it out of the system. The aim is to take the contamination away completely, rather than shift it from one part of the house to another.

The order of work is planned before any tool goes into a duct. We map the return path, the plenum and each supply branch, decide where the extraction unit connects and seal outlets that are not being worked on. Branches are then cleaned one at a time, moving debris toward the collection point. Working this way means a branch we have finished is not dirtied again by loose material from the next one, and suction stays strong where the agitation is happening.

Inner-city systems around South Brisbane vary a lot, from short apartment runs above a bulkhead to long trunk lines in a raised Queenslander. Access points are chosen to suit each layout. Once every branch is done, we check airflow at the outlets and compare camera footage with the baseline taken at the start. Any outlet that still sheds dust is cleaned again before the grilles go back on.

Common questions

How is source removal different from vacuuming the vents?

Vacuuming at the vent only reaches the first stretch of duct and leaves the rest untouched. Source removal works along the full length of each branch, physically dislodging build-up from the duct walls while the whole system is held under suction, so loosened material is captured at a central point.

Will dust come out into the rooms while you work?

The system is held under negative pressure for the whole clean, so air moves from the rooms into the ducts and toward the filtered machine, not the other way. Outlets not being worked on are sealed as well. A small amount of surface dust near an open outlet is wiped up before we leave.

How it works

Four-stage method

  1. 1

    Assess

We review the system layout, duct type and outlet count, then run a camera inspection to record baseline condition and identify any defects.

  2. 2

    Isolate and extract

The system is powered down, outlets are sealed as needed, and a HEPA-filtered negative-air machine is connected to hold ducts under suction.

  3. 3

    Agitate and clean

Each branch is cleaned with brushes or air whips toward the collection point. The plenum, return air and outlets are cleaned in sequence.

  4. 4

    Verify and report

We re-inspect with the camera, reassemble, test airflow at outlets and provide before-and-after photos with brief notes on system condition.
