Sheet-metal trunks tolerate aggressive brushing, while flexible ducting needs gentler tools to avoid tearing the inner liner. We select equipment section by section to clean thoroughly without damaging the duct. Pressure and brush stiffness are adjusted for each material, and access points are chosen to reach the full length of every run.
Most systems combine two very different types of duct. Rigid sheet-metal trunks, common in older installations and commercial buildings, have smooth hard walls that tolerate firm brushing and higher air pressure. Flexible duct, used for most residential branches, has a thin plastic inner liner wrapped around a wire helix, with insulation and an outer sleeve over the top. Clean it the way you would clean sheet metal and you risk tearing the liner or pulling the duct off its fitting.
Before cleaning, we identify the type and condition of each run, often with the camera. Sheet-metal sections are cleaned with rotary brushes sized to the duct. Flexible branches get softer brush heads or air whips, which use bursts of compressed air to knock debris loose without scrubbing the liner. Pressure is adjusted to suit the run. Where a flexible duct is sagging or kinked, we take extra care, because those low points tend to hold the most dust. Joins and fittings are checked as we go.
Some apartment conversions in West End and Milton use rectangular sheet-metal ducts above bulkheads, while nearby houses run entirely on flexible ducting. We plan access points and equipment for each layout separately. Where a single job includes both, we switch tools at the junction between materials. Any existing tears, kinks or loose connections found along the way are recorded in your photo notes, so you know the condition of the ductwork as well as how clean it is.
If you can safely look into the roof space, flexible duct looks like a round, insulated sleeve, often silver or grey, while rigid duct is sheet metal with straight sections and visible joins. Many homes have both. We confirm the type for each run during the initial inspection, so you do not need to check yourself.
Usually, yes, with gentle tools and lower pressure. If the camera shows the inner liner has perished, split or collapsed, cleaning will not restore it and may make the damage worse. In that case we stop, show you the footage and recommend having the section replaced instead.

How it works
We review the system layout, duct type and outlet count, then run a camera inspection to record baseline condition and identify any defects.
The system is powered down, outlets are sealed as needed, and a HEPA-filtered negative-air machine is connected to hold ducts under suction.
Each branch is cleaned with brushes or air whips toward the collection point. The plenum, return air and outlets are cleaned in sequence.
We re-inspect with the camera, reassemble, test airflow at outlets and provide before-and-after photos with brief notes on system condition.
